This picture shows the episode when Feanor left Fingolfin's army in snows and ice when departed on ships to Middle-Earth. Feanor burned the ships when reached the land so Fingolfin and his elves had to go through the Grinding Ice and it was deadly dangerous pass.
"Fingon watched at storming waves madly in hope that one of white ships will come up from the storm and return – but the empty freezing sea roared before him. And then Fingon groaned in powerless rage and despair, like a wounded animal and sticking his white fingers into stone he fell on his knees, clenching teeth and tears swept from his open eyes. The huge wave rolled on pier, breaking and lifting an ice crest to the sky, falling down like a waterfall. Fingon wasn't weak, his heart never knew fear before the enemies, many of elves called him The Brave, but now his throat wrung with weakness. Maedros... my faithful friend... has betrayed me." (c)
